Over the next several years, Beamer underwent dozens of skin graft procedures, leaving him with permanent scarring. He was left with burns on his shoulders, chest, and the right side of his neck. His 11-year-old brother, Barnett saved him by rolling him around on the ground. A spark ignited a nearby can of gasoline, which exploded in front of him. After using a push broom to keep a pile of burning trash in place, he returned it to its place in the garage, unaware that it was smoldering.

He was one of the longest tenured active coaches in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision and, at the time of his retirement, was the winningest active coach at that level. He then went on to become the head football coach at Virginia Tech from 1987 until his final game in 2015.
